Designed in 1972. It has been mass-produced since 1976. It is in service with the Soviet Army and the armies of the Warsaw Treaty countries. Not used in battles.

Design features

Special equipment – 1-KV and 3-UK radio stations, apparatus for telephone and telegraphic conversations, intercom and switching, telephone sets; a gas-electric unit for powering communications has been installed; the machine is equipped with tank navigation equipment. Sewn and chassis – similar to BMP-1.
